Winning Coins
When I saw these lovely coins, my first question was 'who designed them'? Apparently a public competition was launched to redesign the coins and Matthew Dent, 26, a graphic designer from Bangor, North Wales, successfully emerged from a field of 4,000 entrants. Well done Matthew (I actually went to college with a graphic designer called Matthew Dent, who is 26, and I think he was from Wales ... I wonder if its him! ... Watch this space).

nice design, shame about the era
i like these coins, but i'm slightly disappointed that the design is so traditional. why cant we have something a bit more modern, something that represents the time they were minted. We do live in a time of unbelievable scientific, social and technological advancement and yet our coins looks like they're from the 1800s.

era vs style
I agree with Mat; it would be really interesting to see a more contemporary 'visual style' used in our coins. But, putting styling aside, I do think the overall concept (one image, fragmented through multiple coins) is new and compelling.

interactive?
I suppose they are 'interactive' and 'digital' in an old-school, decimal kind of way, but I thought we were moving into a world of digicash and micropayments?

It is my mate Mathew!
After seeing Mathew's photo in the Metro, I realise it is him! Good on him. I like the coins so much more now.

Why did they need a re-design anyway?
Did the old coins go out of date, or wear out in some way? Why waste so much time and effort on this at all? Does money really need to be re-branded? Can it possibly make it any more desirable?
