A friend pointed me into the direction of copyrightdavis.com, an intriguing website that deserves attention and thought. The site is a personal project from illustrator Paul Davis which showcases his interesting and thought provoking illustrations online.

The site itself is like sifting through the Davis mind sack, with a navigation consisting of fluid movement, mark-making and mystery. It’s kind of like a floating map, with each way point having its own personality, each of them wanting to escape, but all tied down to the same central mark.

Moving into his work gallery (work>originals) we see a wide range of diverse ideas. First impressions could easily be confusion, but on closer examination there is a lot to take from these illustrations. I expect, Mr. Davis doesn’t travel anywhere without his trusted sketch pad and pencil, he has a way of visualising his abstract thoughts, that actually makes me kind of jealous. I think generally people dismiss their random thoughts far too easily, taking them for granted and not warranting further analysis…Mr. Davis is quite different, which is definitely reflected through this website.

Davis’ style of illustration and mark-making is not for everybody, and I know that there is a lot of conflict between ol’school and contemporary illustration, but give it a chance. Davis presents a lot of interesting comments on society through his work, and whether you a fan or not, copyrightdavis.com deserves to be recognised for what it is….An interesting voyage through the Davis mind sack!

We'd like you to rate a project for success in three different areas. Tick looks good if it is aesthetically pleasing, and tick works well if it is technically innovative. Most importantly tick performs effectively if you think it meets all of its professional objectives.

Obviously we don't really expect to see any work submitted that is no good, but you never know.

I love this site! It's so much fun and, despite the wonderful quirkiness, the navigation works better than so many others. Simplicity itself!

The simple spidery imagery is no in keeping with Paul's work and after I visited it - prompted by Paul - I was amazed at his modesty about it. He's got one of the most orginal sites I've seen this year there, certainly in terms of an illustration showcase.

    Copyright Davis - Totally Top!

This is one of the best sites I've seen in ages - simple, fun, very quirky, beautiful, eccentric, daft even yet very human (something v. rare on a screen these days) - a well-executed bite of what's the man's vibrant world. His T-Shirt offer looks ambitious... Great stuff. Enjoy.

No such thing as a free lunch

My favorite funcition is the bit where you put in a bid to go for lunch with him. The rest of the site I was a bit dissapointed by after the comments above - the interface is lovely and looks gorgeous, but it gets a bit stark when you get to the shop and I couldn't work out what I was supposed to do with the T-shirt and photograph section.... maybe I'm just thick : )
