Friendchip website
Friendchip
I saw this site a few years ago and was impressed with its basic computer aesthetic. I loved its use of bitmap graphics, simplistic animation, and crazy electronic audio loops. This is unashamedly retro-electro.
Designer Anthony Burrill is the man responsible for the site which showcases both his work for various clients and his own experiments in sound and animation. I was particularly taken by his prototype website for German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk. If ever there was a marriage made in cyberspace surely this was it. I don't know the actual details, but apparently the famously reclusive Kraftwerk were also impressed by the work and modified Anthony's prototype to develop their site from these beginnings.
Some of the links to other sites no longer seem to connect, which is sad, as there's some great stuff here.

minimum-maximum
Amongst the musical highlights of the last couple of years were the live dates performed by Kraftwerk around the world. These performances were stunning for their use of an ultra-wide three-screen projection behind their minimal stage set. The graphics on screen were as starkly bitmapped as those in the Friendchip site above, and beautifully choreographed to the music.
I've been wondering ever since who exactly was responsible for producing this remarkable display. Kraftwerk are notoriously protective of their studio secrets, and prefer to keep everything in-house, hence Anthony Burrill's faltering experience of working 'with' them mentioned above.
In my view, they have never before produced anything so visually powerful as this show in the almost four decades they've existed, not even with their long time visual collaborator Emil Schult. I can only conclude that there must be a new-ish visual 'technician' recently drafted in to their Kling Klang studios to work alongside the audio technicians. No credits for this aspect of the show appear to be listed anywhere. Does anyone reading this have any further information to offer?
The show was well captured on the subsequent dvd release, 'minimum-maximum' and although it is no substitute for the actual events themselves it still should not be missed.
Many of the clips used in the stage show, albeit in 4:3 screen ratio, can be seen in the video section of the official Kraftwerk site. http://www.kraftwerk.de

Loving Lines ...
I think this is a great new project from Jon Harris. His other works have include, www.wordcount.org & www.tenbyten.org I think all his work is brilliant. He is a personal friend of mine from our Fabrica days. So far a lot of his work has been about monitoring images, news and words online. I've always said he needs to do a piece of work that deals with sexuality on the web. After all, isn't true that a huge percentage of the net is devoted to pornography? I suppose Love-Lines is pretty close to sexuality - it definitely deals with human desire.
