PolarClock is a self-initiated project developed by interactive designer, Gabriel Bucknall.

PolarClock can be a screen saver, a Mac Dashboard widget or an iPhone app and it is available for Mac and Windows. The PolarClock uses concentric arcs, to represent the passing of months, dates, days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

I must admit I haven't actually installed the screensaver yet, but the reviews have been really positive. The idea strikes me as an interesting and colourful new way to look at time.

We'd like you to rate a project for success in three different areas. Tick looks good if it is aesthetically pleasing, and tick works well if it is technically innovative. Most importantly tick performs effectively if you think it meets all of its professional objectives.

Obviously we don't really expect to see any work submitted that is no good, but you never know.

    versions

It's standard issue these days to have multiple versions (web, iphone widget etc etc) but when would I actually use this over the built in time and date on my computer?

Why don't you make it into a watch?

Don't answer that, I know why.

Also, why not have a bit more consideration of colour? you could have colour palettes (i.e. blues, reds, monochrome etc) maybe that's just the designer in me wanting control.

    Palatable

I believe you actually can pick the colours yourself. Indulge the control-freak designer in you!

    nowt new.

It's nothing new, I have a vague recollection that Build did something like this a good few years back, albeit black and white and vertical time bars.

Despite this I have downloaded it and it is currently screen saver of the month. Second to Apple RSS news feeds (obviously)

Is it me or are screen savers dead? I mean as far as I can tell they were invented to stop the image burning into the CRT screens of latter days? Perhaps now they are an untapped opportunity of indulgence. Well done Gabriel Bucknall, producing a screen saver that reminds me to wiggle my mouse and stop wasting time is a good thing right?
